Whenever I approach a designing space aesthetics are always a big consideration, but I really like think about the purpose of the room, and by extension how I want to feel in there. I think for many of us, since our bedrooms are typically more private spaces in the home, it’s one of the last rooms on the list to give time and care to. Ironically it’s also the room we spend the most time in. Conscious or unconscious, I believe our surroundings have a huge effect on us and creating a beautiful, calming place to rest and recharge is an act of self care. My bedroom might be my favorite space in my house and I’m asked about it constantly… so I figured it was time to do a deep dive for all of you here, so you can make your own little sanctuary.
For my bedroom I wanted it to feel calm and cozy but also elegant and beautiful. With my overall home aesthetic, I’ve aimed to seamlessly blend transitional, traditional, coastal and French country styles with a Nancy Meyers-inspired touch. To work all of that into the bedroom without having an overwhelming mess, I decided to start with a crisp, clean foundation.

THE FOUNDATION: Bedroom Furniture & Bedding
Living in a beach house with a lot of natural light, the airiness of the home really lends itself to light and breezy neutrals. My talc linen headboard helps to achieve a laid back but elegant look, and paired with light and airy linen bedding really evokes a sense of effortless sophistication. The bed itself is more functional than anything, I have an 18-inch metal frame to accommodate storage underneath, I camouflage this with an 18-inch bedskirt which adds to cozy layers of texture.
To round out the foundational elements, a couple commonly asked about features of my bedroom are the pair of traditional white dressers, sadly they have long been discontinued but I found a comparable one here, and my elm bench at the end of my bed, which was purchased second hand but found a similar one here. Now on to the really fun part… The accessories!

ACCESSORIES: Lighting, Mirrors, Rugs, Art, Trays, Etc.
I am very passionate about lighting, one of my earlier newsletters was entirely dedicated to sconces (read that edition of The Up & Up HERE), but lighting adds dimension to a room without taking up too much square footage. I love the texture and touch of modernity my rattan sconces bring, especially juxtaposed against my vintage french empire crystal pendant light, this was sourced second hand but I found a similar reproduction style here. Another easy way to add in texture is with a woven rug, I found a nice one here that has a similar vibe to mine. Mirrors add a lot of interest to a room, my biggest suggestion with mirror placement is to be mindful of the placement and what it’s reflecting back. Ideally mirrors should sit across from a light source to brighten up the space. My mirror was sourced vintage from Good Buy James but I added a couple I like in my bedroom shopping guide. Layers can also create a lot of dimension in a room and one of my favorite ways to layer is with trays, personally I love the look of woven trays contrasted with thrifted silver plate. Silver plate is something I highly recommend thrifting, but you can also find some nice tray options secondhand like this one on etsy for a pretty reasonable price. The most personal accessory I have is the oil abstract above my bed, it’s an original by Dominque Caron, and was a birthday gift several years back. Art is so subjective but another way to add a little dose of character to your space!
